glad to be home

So, I’ve just spent the last 36 hours with ‘The WI’. Not a problem in itself, as I’m a WI member and generally love meeting and spending time with other members. Unfortunately, the members I have been surrounded by have insisted on giving me a running commentary on where we are, what road signs say (I have had a window seat and am perfectly capable of reading for myself), when they need the loo, what happened when they went to the loo. I have also had a run down on a wide variety of personal problems including a funny rash “down there”, the infidelities of a son in law, second marriages, rude text messages from grandsons(!)  and other inanities that i one day hope to inflict on children and grandchildren of my own! Until then I guess I’ll just have to grin and bear it. Oh the joys of being a young member- youngest by a good 25/30 years in most cases.

On a more positive note, the speakers at the 94th WI AGM (the reason for the coach trips and overnight stay in the middle of nowhere) were all excellent. We had Dr Low OBE of the Charities Aid Foundation (informative), Maureen Lipman (hilarious yet mildly political), Jonathan Wild of Taylors of Harrogate and Bettys (charming and witty), Eve Pollard (slightly confusing but very empowering) and finally Richard Stillgoe and some Orpheus Centre Apprentices (absolutely amazing- funny, moving and ultimately uplifting)- if you have any money to spare go to this website http://orpheus.org.uk/ and give, give, give.

Right, off to bed (hopefully without too many recurring images of “down there”)
